Twitter Founder and former CEO, Jack Dorsey, unpacks the beta version of a decentralized social media application called Bluesky social.

Former Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, unveils the much-awaited Bluesky social app with algo choice and portable accounts. The Bluesky social app now accepts users for private beta accounts.

The announcement by Dorsey comes three years after the inception of the project in December 2019. The social app boasts of a decentralized structure in contrast to other social media platforms like Twitter.

Decentralized App from Jack Dorsey

Dorsey announced the initiative to grant social media users control over their data. The platform also moves the user data from platform to platform without permission.

The Bluesky social app incorporated the AT protocol. Bluesky social app was renamed to a new protocol from ADX to Authenticated Transfer (AT) protocol. The protocol acts as a large-scale distributed social application.

The social application allows for account portability, algorithmic choice, performance and interoperability. User data moves from one provider to another without losing any of your data or social graph.

The AT protocol handles the user identity through domain names such as @alice.com. The domain names then map to cryptographic URLs. The URLs then secure the user’s accounts and data.

Other features of the protocol include interoperation and enhanced performance. Another aspect is depicted through algorithmic choice.

The algorithmic choice gives users access to an open market of algorithms. This happened in tandem with the way users interact with web search engines. The algorithms allow users to select their indexers freely.

What sets BlueSky apart?

Previously, the Bluesky platform described its content moderation model as a multilayer system. The model occurs in multiple layers throughout the system. This includes the algorithms aggregated and thresholds based on reputation.

End user choice also encompasses the multiple-layer model. Bluesky claims that users possess greater control over what they see. Users also determine who they reach on social media platforms using the protocol.

Earlier on, a single corporation seeking engagement controlled and manipulated user capabilities.

The platform ensures a marketplace of companies deciding what to carry to their audiences. Dorsey claimed that users could choose no algorithms.

A Social App wrapped in a mystery

Apparently, not much is known about the Bluesky social app. Currently, the social app allows users to join a private waitlist.

The process enables users to test the beta version before opening it up to the wider public. Dorsey claims that they look forward to sharing more about the Bluesky application as it develops.

Bluesky reached a temporary limit on mailing signups from users signing up for the beta. Switching to the mailing list allows signups to resume.

Bluesky represents the capability of decentralized social apps in paving the way for a better social media experience in the future.
