Ethereum Shanghai Upgrade: Here’s What You Need to Know

In the early morning of 28th February, the Sepolia testnet on Ethereum successfully completed a rehearsal upgrade in preparation for the upcoming Shanghai update. The upgrade simulates the upcoming Shanghai hard fork on the mainnet, scheduled for sometime in the second half of the year.

The Shanghai upgrade is highly anticipated by the Ethereum community. Besides the Ethereum merge in September 2022, the Shanghai upgrade will mark another significant change to the world’s second-largest blockchain.

What is the Shanghai Upgrade?

The Shapella upgrade on the testnet allowed Sepolia to replicate withdrawals of staked Ether on the blockchain.

The Shanghai upgrade, allowing validators to withdraw their staked Ether back into the execution layer, will mark the final step in switching the Ethereum blockchain to proof-of-stake consensus. The transition began sometime last year when the Merge- one of the most significant transitions in crypto history- happened in August 2022.

Ultimately, the Shanghai upgrade aims to solve some of the blockchain’s major pain points for the blockchain’s users. Besides allowing withdrawals, perhaps the most significant benefit of the upgrade is the reduced gas fees.

The Shanghai upgrade is expected to solve the issue of high gas fees on Ethereum, which has been the main reason for developers moving to other Layer 2 solutions like Polygon and Optimism. Reduced costs on Ethereum could make the blockchain the most preferred blockchain for all users.

The upgrade is expected to bring more stakeholders on board the ecosystem, despite concerns that a significant upgrade in the middle of the bear market could have disastrous effects. Still, flexible staking is expected to increase liquidity and attract more institutional investors who can stake their Ether and earn yields, just as they would with fixed financial instruments in the capital markets.

What Next for the Ethereum Blockchain?

The Sepolia testnet rehearsal was only the second of three before the Shanghai update goes live. The final testnet upgrade on Goerli will be implemented later in the month.

The test on Sepolia was closed to the blockchain’s core developers only. It is the smallest of the three testnets in the number of validators, making it the least important.

The Goerli testnet upgrade will be the final and biggest of the three. The testnet holds the most significant number of validators and mimics Ethereum’s activity most closely. If successful, the testnet upgrade will pave the way for the Shanghai update that marks the blockchain’s complete transition to PoS consensus, expected to propel the Ethereum ecosystem to new heights.
