A Pennsylvania-based pharmacist joins the bandwagon of generosity in humanitarian efforts to help thousands of homeless people using crypto.

Kenneth Kim got this idea of merging crypto into humanitarian aid from sci-fi (Science Fiction) movies like Justin Timberlake’s In Time 2011 blockbuster.

His desire to make the world a better place using cryptocurrencies prompted him to launch the Crypto For The Homeless (CTFHL) organization.

What does CTFHL entail?

Crypto For The Homeless is a non-profit organization in New Jersey. The organization has fed over 5000 homeless people across the world through the use of cryptocurrencies.  

During his pharmacy course and study time at the Temple University in Philadelphia from 2018 to 2021, Kim noticed the number of homeless people in the streets of his neighborhood.

Blade Runner 2049, the science-fiction box office special that was released at the time, illustrated a kind of authority where the world was taken over by technology and artificial intelligence.

As the gap between the rich and the poor grew wider every day, people on the streets were begging for digital credits. 

It then prompted his conscious mind to think of how to use crypto and help out the homeless folks. The idea was centered around the need to collect crypto funds for the homeless and donate food to the poor by hand.

The first charity deed was on April 28, 2019, when Kim delivered a set of four hot meals to some of the homeless people in Philadelphia. 

The young pharmacist believed that the decentralized nature of crypto is what made him choose it as his ideal strategy since the funds cannot be frozen or held by authorities or financial institutions.

He insisted that his terrible experience with PayPal is what made him shift his mind to a more user-friendly and supportive financial system and that is how he joined the crypto world. 

The Crypto For The Homeless is structured to reward volunteers who purchase meals and hand-deliver them to homeless folks on the streets.

The volunteers are required to provide receipts and pictures of the homeless people that received the hot meals delivered to them. Once this is verified by the organization, the volunteers are compensated with the crypto of their choosing.

Kim insisted that the organization was set out to reintroduce charity and kindness to the people in the community but not to eradicate homelessness. 

The donations are tracked from the start and provides a public decentralized ledger that allows all participants to view how the funds are spent and accounted for. 

The organization has gathered over $75000 in donations since its incorporation despite it being a small organization.

The Link Between Crypto and Humanitarian Aid

The organization has been able to feed homeless people in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Paraguay, India and many others. Efforts are being made to expand into other countries.

In March 2022, cryptocurrencies aided to rescue of children and women affected by the war in Ukraine through the Save The Children Initiative. The initiative accepts more than 50 types of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Cardano.

Ukraine spent about $34 million of crypto funds received by June 2022.  80% of these were converted to fiat currencies to help the families affected by the Russian-Ukraine war. 

Since the onset of the war, Ukraine has received more than $ 100 million in cryptocurrency donations for humanitarian aid and defense.

Donating crypto to nonprofit organizations such as Save the Children Initiative is an easy way to support humanitarian aid.
