The United States Department of Justice recovered bitcoin worth billions from a wire fraud convict after a 10-year search of the bitcoin theft mystery.

The Department of Justice seized $3.36 billion in cryptocurrency on 7th November 2022, in a historic conviction case. The department announced that James Zhong pled guilty to fraud in connection to the Silk Road black marketplace.

New York Attorney, Damian Williams led the seizure of over 50,000 bitcoin involved in the fraud. In addition, the raid occurred alongside Tyler Hatcher, a special agent in the IRS Criminal Investigation Department.

Department of Justice on James Zhong

The US Department of Justice issued a search warrant against James Zhong’s Georgia home. The search led law enforcement to 51,676.1785 bitcoins. The value of the bitcoin seizure was capped at $3.36 billion in market value.

The seizure marks the largest cryptocurrency seizure in US history.

According to Damian Williams, James committed wire fraud over a decade ago. Zhong stole approximately 50,000 bitcoins from the silk road. However, for over 10 years, the whereabouts of this massive theft catapulted to a whopping $3.3 billion mystery.

Law enforcement located and recovered this impressive store of crime proceeds. The investigation relied on the state-of-the-art cryptocurrency tracing system and old-fashioned police job.

Zhong executed a sophisticated scheme designed to steal bitcoin from the notorious silk road marketplace. Upon a successful heist, he attempted to hide his collection through a series of complex transactions.

He hoped that the transactions would be enhanced through the darknet. Zhong utilized the silk road to deposit anywhere between 200 to 2000 bitcoin.

After a series of withdrawals, Zhong hoped to defraud even more bitcoin than he deposited. Subsequently, Zhong pled guilty to wire fraud. The wire fraud charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The Silk road wired fraud

The silk road represents a notorious flank of the dark web set up in 2011. The silk road was in operation for 2 years from 2011 to 2013. The platform acted as a pipeline for illegal drugs, illegal services and money laundering.

In 2015, the founder of Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht was arrested and sentenced to life in prison. Zhong executed a successful wire fraud in September 2012.

The attempt led to the creation of at least nine fake accounts. The accounts simultaneously launched the silk road withdrawal process. The process created over 140 transactions in rapid succession.

The withdrawal process dispersed Bitcoin into multiple accounts. Then the bitcoin was transferred to multiple addresses and bitcoin wallets. Zhong launched multiple withdrawals. Consequently, the system could not keep track of how many withdrawals were paid out.

Recovered Bitcoin

Law enforcement also recovered $661,900 in cash, 25 Casascius coins worth 174 bitcoins. Other items recovered include four one-ounce silver bars, three one-ounce gold bars and one gold coin.

Law enforcement recovered the items from an underground floor safe and on a single-board computer.

Zhong will be sentenced on February 22, 2023, in the presence of Judge Gardephe.
