The NFT artist Mike Beeple yet again suffers a phishing attack on his Discord URL leading to the draining of users’ wallets.

The famous NFT artist Mike Beeple Winkelmann becomes the target of a phishing attack yet again. The artist warned users that the URL link to his official Discord server was hacked.

The link sent unaware new members to a wallet-draining Discord channel. Other users in the crypto space believe that Lax Security management should take the blame for the attack.

Beeple’s fraudulent Discord URLs

Beeple tweeted on October 3rd warning users not to go into the fraudulent Discord channel. Mike claimed that the Discord URL contained a fraudulent Discord.  He also warned users not to verify or else the scammer would drain their wallets.

According to a screenshot by maxnaut.eth, the URL points to a CollabLand wallet drainer. The Collab.Land Bot on Discord directs members to verify their accounts.

Instead of the normal verification process, the fraudulent  Discord drains the user’s wallets. Beeple informed users that they need to change their Discord as soon as possible.

He reiterated that possibly the users’ Discord URL got hijacked. Beeple suggests that the team did not update the Discord URL on OS.

Despite efforts and claims from Beeple regarding the attack, other crypto users do not agree. Crypto Twitter users believe that Lax Security management ought to take the blame. The users claim that mismanagement of Discord URLs allowed the attack to happen.

One of the users linked the attack to a similar occurrence that happened to CryptoBatz.

Other reports on the attack

However, other users besides Beeple reported the hijacking of the Discord URLs. Twitter user maxnaut.eth noted a similar occurrence within the OpenSea marketplace.

The user claims that the attackers hijacked the NFT collection. The attack targeted the Beeple: Everydays – 2020 collection on OpenSea.

Surprisingly, cybersecurity firm Black Alchemy Solutions Group believes otherwise. The firm claims that the Discord URLs presented no points of attack to ensure such a problem.

Black Alchemy claimed that the attack resulted from mismanagement of the Beeple Information Security apparatus. The firm further recommended the hiring of a Vciso (Security Officer).

Nonetheless, it seems that the artist ultimately fixed the misdirecting Discord URLs. Currently, at the time of writing, the Discord link on OpenSea no longer exists.

A target of a phishing attack

Beeple continues to face more phishing attacks from scammers and hackers. In May, a phishing attack obtained $438,000 in crypto and NFTs. The phishing attack hijacked Beeple’s Twitter account.

The hijackers linked the Twitter account to a raffle purporting to be related to a Louis Vuitton NFT collaboration.

In November 2021, another scam hit Beeple’s profile. The attack comprised an admin account and advertised a fake NFT. The scam netted an estimated 38ETH worth roughly $176,378.14.

However, Beeple did not disclose the number of users affected by the phishing attacks in both cases.

Beeple sold some of the most expensive NFTs on record such as the First 5,000 Days. The First 5,000 Days entails a compilation of 5,000 pieces of artwork. The artwork sold for $69.3 million.

With his high-profile clients such as Elon Musk and Apple, Beeple remains a target for more crypto scams.
