Another project by Gridless Compute in rural East Africa brings more affordable power options from stagnant hydroelectric energy to 1600 families in Southern Malawi. It is the second project of its kind in Africa, with a promise of more.
According to a tweet by Gridless Compute on January 21, the organization extended its reach to a rural village in Malawi, offering 1600 families affordable energy options.
1600 families connected to this remote hydro minigrid in the mountains of southern Malawi. They have 50kW of stranded energy that we are testing out as a new Bitcoin mining site.

The area, which has around 50 kilowatts of stranded hydroelectric energy, stands as a good location for a bitcoin mining site. However, its immediate goal was connecting the community to its mini-grid.
The power developer within the area constructed powerhouses a while ago, but the lack of profitability led to the project’s stalling. Gridless offered a deal, allowing the developer to increase the grid by 20 meters, vailing energy for more families.
Most plans are still underway, with the company proceeding with wiring and venting, among other activities. Another tweet confirmed that Gridless was discussing with village leaders to explain what is underway.
