Sony has recently completed the acquisition of Beyond Sports, a company specializing in using real-world data to produce 3D animation. The company is now reportedly able to offer a full metaverse experience for sports matches, complete with tech from other companies already in its portfolio.
The entertainment and electronics giant, Sony, has recently acquired Beyond Sports which is a Dutch company that deals with real-world data to produce 3D animation. Sony acquired all the outstanding shares of the startup company.
The acquisition will enable Sony to offer a full metaverse experience for sports matches through the help of technology from other companies already in its portfolio.
In collaboration with Hawk-Eye Innovations, a company owned by the conglomerate will enable Sony to deliver real-time content relating to basketball, baseball, tennis and football. Though not yet disclosed, the acquisition of Beyond Sports stands at about $70m.
The work effort between Sony and Beyond Sports might spur Sony into developing a digital, accurate presentation of a field or court featuring lifelike ball and player movement.

How will Sony offer the metaverse experience?
Hawk-Eye Innovations develops camera systems that track the ball’s movement during sports events. The camera systems are leveraged in more than 20,000 sports games and matches in approximately more than 90 countries.
However, despite the system’s efficiency it still has some loopholes. The 3D data that the system compiles from the multiple cameras are not precise enough.
So the plan is for Sony to use Beyond Sports technology to cover this loophole. Through the know-how from the sports science field, the technology will help convert even incomplete game data into a full 3D animation. Such a test has already run successfully in the National Football League and the National Hockey League.
Sony has plans to incorporate its line of PlayStation consoles as distribution devices to offer the metaverse matches. Through the company’s VR headsets, which are still in the developing phase, users will experience the metaverse in a captivating way. The VR headset is solely created for the console PlayStation VR 2 and is set to be launched in early 2023.
Sony’s interest in the sport’s World
Sony has expressed its clear interest in the sports field in the past few years. Last year, in 2021 the Japanese company partnered with Manchester City in an attempt to visualize the team’s stadium and players in the metaverse.
By leveraging all these partners in its portfolio, Sony can successfully create spectator Sports. This means that sports will become a spectacular new entertainment business for the company.
