The Federal Police from Brazil arrested the Bitcoin Sheikh over alleged fraudulent activities involving a crypto pyramid scheme that targeted thousands of people and cashed millions in funds.
Police in Brazil halts the operations of a crypto organization citing fraud claims from thousands of people. The Brazil Federal police claim that the alleged organization laundered illicit crypto funds worldwide.
The crypto organization defrauded thousands of people and stole hundreds of millions from users. The Brazil Federal police, however, remained adamant in naming any suspects as investigations continue.
The alleged crypto scam
The Brazil Federal police identified Francisely Valvedino da Silva as the legitimate leader of the organization. The authorities claim that the organization allegedly embezzled funds from over 10 countries.
Apparently, the company assured victims that a large team of experienced crypto experts would take their funds. The organization assured users of a payback coupled with 20% in monthly returns.
The scammers offered a cryptocurrency token, the cryptocurrency token, however, lacked any liquidity.
Da Silva placed much of the funds into gold bars, luxury cars and expensive watches. The span of luxurious items traversed the entire country.
After the victim’s money ran dry, Da Silva opted to delay. He then stopped paying monthly returns to clients. Da Silva also blocked several withdrawal attempts from his platform.
Bitcoin Sheikh and his pyramid scheme
Apparently, Da Silva ran a crypto asset investment pyramid scheme. Despite being linked to over 100 companies in Brazil, his reputation still remains on the line.
According to his attorney, Da Silva is ready to prove the effective regularity and lawfulness of the business operations.
Consequently, law enforcement raided over 20 addresses linked to the scheme. The task force involved a collaborative investigation with US authorities.
The authorities suspect the group laundered up to $769 million. The money laundering scheme took place in the past several years. The leaders also seized gold bars, luxury cars and expensive watches bought with defrauded money.
Da Silva coined the ‘Bitcoin Sheikh’ and will face legal action pending the investigation.
The organization reportedly created and marketed its own crypto in order to bait investors. Some of the celebrities defrauded include Sasha Meneghel and other unnamed soccer players.
Sasha, the daughter of Brazilian Television star Xuxa, lost 1.2 million reals ($230,000) in the scheme.
Brazil Operation Poyals
The Brazil Federal police nicknamed the sting operation ‘Operation Poyals’. The name mimics the 19th-century Scotsman and confidence trickster, Gregor MacGregor. MacGregor sold bonds and deeds for the fictional country of Poyals.
Investigations into the alleged scheme began in March this year. The US Department of Homeland Security requested help from International Police Cooperation, Interpol.
The lawsuit implicates members of Da Silva’s family as employees of the fraudulent company. The family members also benefited from the pyramid scheme. The family members will be charged alongside Da Silva.
