Binance Launches Ethereum Staking ahead of the Merge

The famous cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, launches an Ethereum staking program ahead of the Ethereum Merge slated for mid-September by offering a higher annual yield percentage to counteract rival exchanges.

Binance introduces ether (ETH) staking in the US ahead of the anticipated Ethereum Merge this month.

Binance will start offering a 6% annual percentage yield (APY) to its customers. The customers will soon enjoy a great yield for as low as 0.001ETH ($1.51) staked in the crypto exchange.

Binance staking program

Binance first started offering staking to US customers in June. The crypto exchange now supports tokens of other blockchains. Some of the blockchains include Cardano (ADA), Polkadot (DOT) and Polygon (MATIC).

At the time, Binance planned to outdo the staking APYs offered by rival exchanges. The CEO of Binance.US, Brian Shroder, promised to outdo rival exchanges including Coinbase and Gemini.

The extended support to Ethereum suggests that Binance views ETH as a major staking battleground. This makes Binance the latest major exchange to do so ahead of the merge.

The exchange offers the highest annual percentage yield among exchanges in the US. Two other major exchanges also launched ETH staking. These crypto exchanges include Kroken and Coinbase. The Switzerland-based global crypto lender, SEBA Bank also followed suit.

So far, over 13.7 million ETH accounted for the deposits on the Ethereum beacon chain. The digital assets cap at a total value of more than $23 billion.

Liquidity staking service, Lido Finance remains the biggest depositor. The firm controls in excess of 30% of staked ETH on the Beacon Chain.

How will the ETH staking be done?

Staking involves users locking up their digital assets to support the proof-of-stake networks. Crypto miners validate transactions on proof-of-work (PoW) blockchains like bitcoin.

Crypto miners also solve complicated mathematical puzzles. They utilize high-powered computers that use large amounts of electricity.

Staking can act as mining in protocols that use the proof-of-stake consensus. Once Ethereum adopts proof-of-stake, legions of volunteers will validate transactions.

However, Ethereum staking involves locking up ETH on the blockchain; staking it. This gives the participant the opportunity to validate transactions. Subsequently, the validators yield more ETH as a reward after the process is completed.

To become a validator, network participants need to lock up 32ETH on the blockchain. This sums up to about $50,000. Validators then acquire randomly assigned responsibilities.

The responsibilities include validating transactions and constructing new blocks. Other tasks revolve around the overall functionality of the blockchain.

In return, stakers earn a yield paid in ETH. The yield will fail if a validator fails to validate a block once assigned the responsibility.

The Ethereum merge

The merge represents the joining of the existing execution layer of Ethereum with its new PoW consensus layer. Soon, the current Ethereum mainnet will merge with the Beacon Chain proof-of-stake system.

The merge marks the end of proof-of-work for Ethereum. Ethereum expects a full transition into the proof-of-stake. This sets the stage for future scaling upgrades including sharding.  The merge will reduce Ethereum’s energy consumption by about 99.95%.

The merge signifies the most important upgrade in the History of Ethereum. Extensive testing and bug bounties will continue in order to ensure a safe transition to proof-of-stakes. The process of testing currently stands at its final stages.

Ethereum plans to undergo the merge on a few public testnets before moving to the mainnet. The merge will take place in mid-September.
